Get rid of back-to-front dates

Posted by Cri de Coeur to Settings, 29 Apr 09 at 11:20

Why does this otherwise excellent email service insist on using these screwed-up, back-to-front dates with days months and years organized in no recognizable form of logic or progression. At least give people the option to set their interface to the standard dd/mm/yy format; and a nice bonus would be the option to adopt the ISO yyyy/mm/dd format which is so useful for archiving. You do set out to be an international service, so please, please get up to speed on this one.

I've voted for this but disagree with the member's choice of wording. Nothing is screwed up, just give us the option for the North American or European date format.

jayli 2 Jul 09 at 22:31

Surprised this was not implemented from the start, and that it has not yet been implemented since. Availability of European and international-style dates is essential for proper use outside the US. Availability only of US date format makes the system look very parochial and stops its adoption as the web-based e-mail system of choice.

I happen to like dd mmm yy formats. I've used them for years in various situations. The advantage is that the day, being on the left, is easily discerned. If given the choice, I'd probably use that format. However, I do heartily agree with the underlying point ... it should be configurable. I would hope more options than those suggested would be available. To wit, besides mm/dd/yy, yyyy-mm-dd or dd mmm yy, add dd mmm, mmm dd, or even merely dd. With messages sorted in date order, months and years can be implied, so that data is redundant. Regardless, client choice is the mark of professional, client oriented work.

ISO YYYY/MM/DD

splash897 14 Jul 09 at 21:32

It is confusing using back to front dates, I've never used dates and this way before Thanks

icerolyuk 5 Aug 09 at 12:53

I don't think it really matters as long as we are clear on which convention is in use

Tom Dyball 5 Aug 09 at 20:50

I agree with Cri de Coeur that it would be a good idea to give people the option of date format including yyyy/mm/dd, which as s/he says is useful for archiving.

miketup 12 Aug 09 at 23:15

Please allow the user to chose the regional date format as to do otherwise will not allow a logical sort order.
Thanks for an excellent and evolving email program.

Give us the choice!

rasker 19 Aug 09 at 19:14

The iso format is so much more useful once you get used to it. Please don't skip that if this gets implemented

methuzla 19 Aug 09 at 21:22

really should be configurable
how does one know if 5/1/09 is Jan fifth or maybe May twelfth?

tcvarlh 29 Aug 09 at 14:39

ISO is a nice idea but impractical as DOS doesn't use it and therefore would mean re writing file time stamps, however the logical and truly only intelligent system is DD/MM/YYYY The Day is the accepted norm as is the Hour, not year or second. Days are added together to make months and months to make years, not broken down. Hours are broken down. The ISO version is a foolish and really typical bureaucratic nonsense, almost EU quality. HH:MM:SS, DD/MM/YYYY Let's keep it simple!

mwlsh 12 Sep 09 at 10:46

The ISO ymd format is the most logical date format, especially when combined with time as hms: l-to-r getting smaller & smaller. I expect that the date & time on the e-mail header is already in this format, so using this may have a tiny processing saving.

There is so much user opinion in favour of being given the option to customise the date format (i prefer dd/mm/yy) . . . . . I cannot understand why the issue has not been addressed yet. Is there an insuperable snag in providing this facility? GMX would you like to comment?

kryton 9 Oct 09 at 14:46

i agree, with give me the choice

paulburns 29 Oct 09 at 02:41

If you log in to GMX using www.gmx.co.uk (instead of www.gmx.com) your dates will all be in dd/mm/yy format.

methuzla 2 Nov 09 at 22:30

I blame the Americans.

urgentlog 6 Nov 09 at 16:49

Just give us the choice. The rest of the site is great Thanks

check4@gmx.com 11 Nov 09 at 16:19

Please advise how we can configure dates to the European style, which we are used to in the UK! US style gets confusing.

akadk 22 Nov 09 at 19:29

I agree with the sentiments (but some of the ways of expressing them aren't "helpful"). I personally would like the choice to change the date format.

Thanks

NinjaInc 23 Nov 09 at 23:30

Am I missing something? I don't see any responses back to any of the postings related to this subject from GMX.
I entirely agree with Cri de Coeur. The date format should be configurable, and as it stands with its back to front mm / dd convention, it's very very annoying!

NinjaInc 23 Nov 09 at 23:31

Still annoyed!!

gareth.jenkins@gmx.co.uk 8 Dec 09 at 13:26

I agree, seems to be a lack of logic so far

matsuri8988@gmx.com 10 Jan 10 at 09:57

There is no "Next" button ,there must be a next button so we can read the next message and dont have to go back to INBOX

lucvd@gmx.com 15 Jan 10 at 16:57

This also a very important idea. Here in Europe we use dd/mm/YYYY. It should be possible to change the format to europe and others..

Matt 22 Jan 10 at 06:07

Please yes! This would be great

bluecheeseontoast 28 Jan 10 at 08:28

Give us the choice of date format, either US or European ....Please!

check4@gmx.com 2 Feb 10 at 12:18

Definitely agree - this is the most irritating feature on Gmx.

tgk@gmx.us 5 Feb 10 at 09:58

Yep, I agree too. Give us the option of using the date format (DD/MM/YYYY) used by almost the entire world, or keeping it in the illogical, confusing date format as used by just a relative few people in north america.

check4@gmx.com 6 Feb 10 at 16:14

Please put onto the European format now, with an option to change if required.
Thanks.

check4@gmx.com 12 Feb 10 at 11:53

Please put my account back onto European date format permanently.

geoffmulhall 20 Feb 10 at 07:25

Agree. Needs to be fixed with the option of dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy

jacques77 25 Feb 10 at 02:09

I guess it is country customized. I am on gmx.fr and the dates are dd/mm/yyyy which is the format used in France.
ISO format as an option could be usefull.
So let us choose.
