Rafael Nadal in 'good shape' for Australian Open

Rafael Nadal is feeling in "good shape" ahead of the Australian Open.

The Spanish tennis great has struggled for form and fitness in the lead-up to the first Grand Slam of the year but Nadal is feeling upbeat about his prospects in Melbourne following his memorable triumph last year.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion said: "It’s true that the last couple of tournaments I wasn’t able to play to my standards and here at the beginning of the season I lost two matches in Sydney, but honestly, I am not unhappy with the preparation.

"I think I’m in good shape. You need to demonstrate that in matches… but I’m confident that if I am able to have this last week of positive practice, why not?"

Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev from two sets down to win the Australian Open in 2022 and regards the win as one of the "most important" of his storied career.

He recalled: "Probably this one is one of the more unexpected ones. Very emotional.

"The final comeback is one of the most important in my career."

This is Nadal's first Grand Slam since he became a father last year and he has to make adjustments now he has a baby son in his life.

He said: "It‘s about adapting to this new part of my life in all ways.

"You need a little bit more organisation than before without a doubt. But it’s the first time that happens in my life.

"So I need some time to adjust all the things that are going to help me to stay the same as before, but I think I have all the things around me that help me to keep going without problems."
