Barclay hit by six-month Achilles injury absence

Edinburgh's new signing John Barclay will miss the start of next season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The 31-year-old Scotland captain and back-row star suffered the injury during current side Scarlets' Pro14 semi-final win at Glasgow on Friday and, following surgery to repair the tendon, he is now facing up to six months on the sidelines.

In addition to being absent for Scarlets' Pro14 final showdown against Leinster on Saturday, Barclay is also set to miss out on the first few months of the 2018-19 campaign with Edinburgh, as well as Scotland's autumn internationals against Fiji, South Africa and Argentina in November.

Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill said: "It's naturally disappointing to lose one of our key summer signings through injury, but I'm more disappointed for the player as I know how much he was looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season.

"We're still looking forward to welcoming a man of John's calibre into the group this summer where I know he will help build on the culture and environment that we established last season."
