Pichot urges World rugby to learn from Warburton injury

World rugby vice-chairman Agustin Pichot has admitted that Sam Warburton's injury is a red flag for the sport.

The Wales star confirmed his retirement on Wednesday after failing to recover from a neck injury.

Warburton's announcement at the age of 29 is a huge blow for the sport, with the Lions flanker having suffered his fair share of injuries throughout his career.

Pichot admits the news is a warning for rugby players who have been given increased workloads and he admits discussions are taking place with the International Rugby Players Association.

He told reporters: "The red flags are there - Sam is one red flag - there was a tweet I saw about the number of injuries he has had and it was frightening.

"He had an outstanding career, but a number of injuries. We have to take care of the future generations."
