Nuno Espirito Santo: Football is empty without fans

Nuno Espirito Santo admits that football without fans has given him an empty feeling.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers boss leads his team into their Europa League tie against Olympiakos on Thursday (06.08.20), nearly five months after the first leg in Greece, which finished 1-1 but admits he is struggling to embrace matches without the presence of supporters, who are currently not allowed to attend live sport due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 46-year-old coach said: "There is an emptiness, before, during and after the matches. This is the feeling everybody has. It doesn't feel the same."

Before that game, Nuno said there was "no point" playing without supporters and he has not changed his opinion after completing the Premier League season behind closed doors.

He said: "My opinion didn't change too much. We want to compete with the fans in the stadium.

"But the pandemic is not over. Maybe the second wave is coming. But at the same time we are committed to helping football.

"In the end, everyone will have time to decide what to do themselves in this situation but, for now, everybody in football must help and must commit and stay together."

The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc to the football calendar and Nuno has urged teams involved in European competition to be given more time to prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign, which is set to begin on September 12.

He said: "I'm hopeful the Premier League will look at that and allow the teams involved a little bit more time.

"Mainly because of the players - they need time. We know we have a tight schedule next season and they must be aware of the health of the players and must take care of them.

"The Premier League should acknowledge the teams involved in Europe, depending on how far they go, as the players require more time to recover. We are going to play in August and we're going to start playing again in September."
