Xavi stays on as Barcelona boss following U-turn

Xavi has agreed to remain as Barcelona boss.

The coach has performed a dramatic reversal after previously announcing that he was going to step down at the end of the current campaign.

However, Xavi is thought to have decided to stay on until the end of his contract in 2025 following a meeting with the club's president Joan Laporta on Wednesday (24.04.24).

Barca's vice-president Rafa Yuste seemingly confirmed the development when he spoke to reporters after leaving the meeting.

He said: "We had a meeting with the coach and the president in which Xavi showed us his commitment. He is a Barca guy, he is the coach who can lead our project and our young players from the club. I am convinced that he will do a great job, I am very happy for him because he is a great 'cule'.

"I am happy [with Xavi staying] because I always defended the continuity of the project he started two-and-a-half years ago.

"We have not talked [in the meeting] about changes in our team at all. Xavi has shown his enthusiasm and we must support him and his staff to continue with this project."

Xavi previously said that he felt "liberated" after announcing his intention to leave and stated that the job he had done with the Catalan club was "not well valued".

He explained: "Our job and what we have done is not well valued, and that's why I decided that it [the season] was going to be my last one as coach.

"They make you feel you are not worth it, every day. It happened to all coaches - I spoke to Pep [Guardiola] and he already told me, also with Ernesto [Valverde], with Luis Enrique I lived it, I saw him suffer.

"I have heard I made the decision for one reason or another but no, it's just because I think our job and what we have done is not well-valued and that's why I decided a long time ago, in fact at the beginning of the season.

"The announcement liberated me on a personal level, but I remain very motivated."
