Unai Emery remains focused with Aston Villa on the cusp of the Champions League

Unai Emery is focused on Aston Villa's final match of the season as the team stands on the brink of Champions League qualification.

The Villans will book a place in Europe's top competition next term if Tottenham fail to beat Manchester City on Tuesday (14.05.24) but Emery only has eyes on the weekend's match with Crystal Palace in the event that his team require a result to achieve their ambition.

Speaking after Villa's 3-3 Premier League draw with Liverpool on Monday (13.05.24), Emery said: "I am exhausted, more than the players. We are very proud of how we finished here, not winning, but playing a match with desire to beat Liverpool and get to the fourth position.

"We didn’t get it and there is still one match to play on Sunday at Palace. We were here creating something special.

"It is not in my hands, there are other teams playing for different objectives."

Villa captain John McGinn quipped that Villa players will "have Manchester City tops on" as they know a spot in the Champions League will be secured with a helping hand from the title contenders.

The midfielder told Sky Sports: "It’s a brilliant effort towards the end. We got a bit of luck. It’s been a tough few weeks with lads coming back and playing through the pain barrier.

"There’s some of us that have never been close to the Champions League in our life.

"The manager has a no-excuse mentality. People have written us off and we’ve floated under the radar.

"We’ll have our Man City tops on tomorrow."
