Vitor Pereira spoke to multiple English clubs

Vitor Pereira spoke to six English clubs before being hired by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 56-year-old Portguese manager had always wanted to work in the Premier League and is "very grateful" to have been offered the job at his current club last December.

He told Telegraph Sport: “Do you know how many meetings I had here in England? The first one, West Bromwich, in the Premier League, maybe 15 years ago.

“The second? Everton. Third? Crystal Palace with the proposal, with the contract for two-and-a-half years. Then they changed the idea for another [manager], but I realised that is normal here.

“After that, Chelsea, then Everton again, then Arsenal. I had a very long, very good meeting with Arsenal before they signed [Mikel] Arteta.

“Watford was the only time that I said no. I didn’t want to do it. It was the time that they were relegated [in 2020]...

“I’m very grateful to Wolves because they gave me the opportunity to be in the league that I believe gives me the opportunity to be at my best level.”

Vitor - who had talks with Everton a third time in January 2022 - has turned Wolves' fortunes around, taking them out of the relegation zone and behind only title winners Liverpool and Newcastle for the league victories since he took charge and he's admitted he's happy to push his players.

He said: “It’s my personality, I’m a confident guy, believe me. Football is like a drug for me and I can’t live without it. I want to compete with the best.

“I committed a lot of mistakes in my career and these mistakes give me the opportunity to be stronger now. Mistakes with the superstars, how to manage the big names, how to manage the big egos, how to give confidence in the middle of a season, and to make an impact on the first day."

And he's got his sights set on an even more successful season next year.

He said: “I didn’t come to England just to avoid relegation. If you look at my career, this is not my career.

“In the summer we will see if we can make the right decisions and get the right players to rebuild, to make this team stronger. I believe this is not about a lot of money, it’s about selecting the right targets and to move forward and do a good job to get them. We cannot make mistakes, we must be better than the others.

“I believe if we make the right steps next season, we can be in the middle of the table. And after, if we make another step forward, with good decisions, we can think.”
