Jannik Sinner feels fortunate not to have missed Grand Slams during doping ban

Jannik Sinner admits it was "good news" that he didn't miss any Grand Slam tournaments during his doping ban.

The world number one is set to return to action at the Italian Open in Rome this week after serving a three-month suspension after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over his two positive tests last year and says he was fortunate not to miss any of the major events.

Sinner told reporters: "Of course when you go to court it can go both ways - nothing or a lot.

"I didn't want to do it [agree a settlement] in the beginning, so it was not easy for me to accept it because I know what really happened.

"But sometimes we have to choose the best in a very bad moment, and that's what we did.

"For me personally it's good news that there are not the Grand Slams included."

The Italian ace has "low expectations" for the Italian Open and is looking forward to competing again after his enforced absence from the court.

Sinner, who has remained as world number one despite his ban, said: "I am happy in the position I am but I would be happy even if I'm three or four in the world.

"I'm just happy to be back here - I'm happy to play again in front of the fans, and I have a goal in front of my eyes."

Sinner was unable to watch any other sport in person due to the conditions of his ban and admits that it was painful to miss out on other experiences.

The three-time major champion said: "The toughest part was that in the beginning I couldn't watch any other sport really, in real life.

"I don't know how many know this but watching a simple football match in a stadium, I couldn't go there to watch it.

"I wanted to support my friends in cycling or motorsport - I couldn't go there."
