The 38-year-old golfer went 14 years without a win but has claimed four victories since March 2024, which he believes is a result of “more intense practice” rather than just hitting balls.
Asked what sparked his turnaround, he told Today’s Golfer magazine: “It’s really, really simple actually.
“I probably hit less golf balls now than I used to, but I do a lot more skills testing, so more intense practice.
“That’s definitely been one of the keys because when I lost my [DP World Tour] card two years ago, I was about 140th in Strokes Gained.
“I was up to fifth at one point this year, but I’m around the top 10 now.
“Sometimes it’s easy to work out what you’re not good at but the hard bit is to improve it.
“I’ve managed to do that through a bit of technical stuff and skill tests.”
And John thinks his new approach has helped him mentally prepare for tournaments in a better way, as well as using his time more efficiently.
He said: “I’ve got a TrackMan and an app called TrackMan Pro where you can set distances. So it might be eight shots with each wedge and then I’ll have a mid and long iron test.
“So it’s not a lot. I’m only hitting maybe 60 balls, but it brings up a green on a screen and they might put the pin on the back edge of a green.
“So you start trying to play like you would on the course but on the driving range.
“It then gives you Shots Gained stats. That’s probably helped my mental prep because I’m just getting into a good routine.
“The stupid thing is, by hitting 60 shots, it feels more beneficial and intense than hitting 200 balls.”
