Tijjani Reijnders ‘ecstatic’ over signing for Manchester City

Tijjani Reijnders is “ecstatic” over signing for Manchester City.

Following confirmation of his £46.5 million transfer from AC Milan, he added he couldn’t wait to get playing for the team as he considers the team one of the finest set-ups in football.

He said: “City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities.

“Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years.”

Reijnders, 26, joins City on a five-year contract as the club’s fourth summer signing ahead of this month’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

He follows Rayan Ait-Nouri, 23, Rayan Cherki, 20, and Marcus Bettinelli, 32, into the Etihad ranks.

The Netherlands international has been registered in time to be eligible for City’s opening fixture on 18 June against Moroccan champions Wydad AC in Philadelphia.

And his transfer marks a key part of Manchester City’s strategy to rebuild their midfield following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne, 33.

Reijnders was named Serie A’s midfielder of the season after scoring 15 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions for Milan.

He has been capped 22 times for the Netherlands national team but remained an unused substitute in their 8–0 win over Malta earlier this week.

Despite previously considering Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, 21, City opted to withdraw from a potential £127 million deal.

Instead, they strengthened the squad with Reijnders and Cherki in midfield, as well as Ait-Nouri at left-back, for a combined total of around £108 million.

All three players, along with Bettinelli, are available for Club World Cup selection.

Reijnders joins City amid a significant transitional phase for the club.

While Cherki has already arrived, midfielders Kalvin Phillips, 28, James McAtee, 21, and Jack Grealish, 29, are all expected to depart.

Defender Kyle Walker, 34, spent part of last season on loan and may also exit.

There has been speculation over the futures of Ederson, 31, Stefan Ortega, 31, Nathan Ake, 29, and John Stones, 30.

The restructuring of Guardiola’s midfield options is further shaped by the advancing ages of Ilkay Gundogan, 34, Bernardo Silva, 30, and the injury concerns surrounding Mateo Kovacic, 30.

Despite spending £50 million on Nico Gonzalez, 22, in February, City’s midfield was criticised for lacking physicality as they ended last season without a major trophy for the first time in eight years.

Reijnders, who turns 27 next month, is expected to bring dynamism to the centre of the pitch.

He ended last season with 10 goals and four assists in Serie A.

Only Napoli’s Scott McTominay, 27, registered more goal involvements among midfielders.

Reijnders also ranked ninth in the league for forward passes, and fifth for both through balls and ball carries.
