Liverpool FC left 'devastated' by Diogo Jota's death

Liverpool FC have been left "devastated" by the death of Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese forward died in a car accident alongside his brother Andre in the early hours of Thursday (03.07.25) morning in the Spanish city of Zamora and his club have issued a statement following the tragic news.

The Premier League champions said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Jota - who married his long-term girlfriend and the mother of his three children Rute Cardoso last month - signed for Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and was part of the squad that won the Premier League title last season.

He also lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time at Anfield.

At international level, Jota won 49 caps for Portugal and won the Nations League twice with his country - most recently after beating Spain on penalties last month in what proved to be his final match.

The Portuguese Football Federation paid tribute to the player and his sibling - who represented the Portuguese second-tier side Penafiel - and have requested that a minute's silence take place in the pair's honour at the Women's Euro 2025 match between Portugal and Spain this evening.

The federation's President Pedro Proenca said: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, this early morning, in Spain.

"Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.

"On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, they played their football.

"The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute's silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women's European Championship...

"The loss of Diogo and Andre represent irreplaceable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything, daily, to honour their legacy."

Jota also spent time on loan at Portuguese club Porto, who stated that they were in "mourning" over the loss of the star and his brother - who had also represented the team at youth level.

The club wrote in a post on social media: "It is with shock and deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.

"Rest in peace."
