Manchester United ‘fear Ruben Amorim may resign instead of being sacked’

Manchester United are reportedly concerned Ruben Amorim could resign as manager instead of being sacked.

According to The i Paper, the 40-year-old head coach is “taken aback” by the level of scrutiny he is consistently put under following every Red Devils defeat.

Manchester United have suffered a poor start to the season under Amorim, with its latest defeat coming from Brentford last Saturday (09.27.25).

As a result, Amorim has become the sixth-lowest point-scoring manager at Manchester United after 33 matches as head coach.

Even so, co-owners Ineos is reportedly willing to be “patient” with Amorim, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe is “desparate” to give the manager the full season to prove himself.

Insiders are said to be concerned Amorim may jump before he is pushed in an effort to avoid further “embarrassment”, though no replacements for the manager are reportedly being lined up.

Even so, former Middlesborough manager Michael Carrick, 44, is reportedly a “potential option” for Manchester United if Amorim does choose to exit the club.

It had previously been reported Gareth Southgate, 55, was being considered as Amorim’s replacement, though it has now been claimed Manchester United have not contacted the former England manager about the job.

Following Manchester United’s 3-1 loss the Brentford, Amorim insisted he was confident he could still turn things at the Red Devils around.

He said: “I'm always doing my job,” said Amorim. “If I win, I'm in a different state of mind. That is normal, but I'm always confident, because I know what to do.

“It's my job and I'm not here just to protect the players. I'm trying to do what is best for the club and the team.

“But that is the pressure of the club. So I'm just thinking what is the best way to win the next game.

“I'm not trying to protect the players or myself. I'm just trying to win the next game, create the momentum.

“I try to be really objective in my analysis of the game. Today we played the game of Brentford, not our own game. And when you play the opponent's game, it's harder to win in the end.”

Manchester United - who are sat in 14th place in the Premier League - are due to face Sunderland on Saturday (10.04.25).
