Ederson needed a 'new challenge' away from Manchester City

Ederson felt that he needed to leave Manchester City.

The Brazilian goalkeeper departed the Etihad Stadium after eight successful years to join Turkish side Fenerbahce and has revealed that he tried to leave the club earlier after suffering from several injury problems.

Ederson said: "In a previous season I had already tried to leave, but it didn't work out.

"That affected me a little. It was a decision I had already made with my family to talk to the club about leaving if they agreed. I needed this change. There's no point in being at a giant, successful club if you're not happy.

"It would have continued to affect me in the same way. It's good to have new challenges in your life, in your career. With this change, I'm breathing football again, feeling the atmosphere at the games in Turkey, which is crazy. I'm very happy with this new challenge, eager to win."

Ederson also revealed that City boss Pep Guardiola has asked him to return to the club for a proper farewell one day because of the sudden nature of his switch to Turkey.

The goalkeeper - who won 18 trophies during his time at City - told The Sun: "The conversation I had with Pep is difficult to explain now because I had to speak to him on the phone, after games there’s no time to talk as he’s always busy.

"When he got back to me, he said, ‘You have to come to say a proper goodbye.’ Then the next day he sent me a message about how many wins I have in my career.

"But I love Pep, and I love him for his mentality. He’s the best coach of our time for me. It was a pleasure to work with him."
