Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi ‘frontrunners to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United’

Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi have reportedly emerged as the leading candidates to replace Ruben Amorim as Manchester United’s new manager.

The Red Devils moved quickly after Sunday’s (01.04.26) 1-1 draw at Leeds United, with the club sitting in sixth in the Premier League and concluding Amorim’s position had become untenable after 14 months in charge.

United’s hierarchy is understood by The Telegraph newspaper to be weighing up two contrasting profiles, with Crystal Palace manager Glasner said to be highly regarded internally after his impact at Selhurst Park.

Meanwhile, former Brighton and Marseille head coach De Zerbi is reportedly admired for his possession-heavy philosophy and tactical clarity.

The club’s thinking reportedly centres on the type of football they want to commit to long-term.

Glasner’s Eagles are said to have impressed with an aggressive, counter-attacking approach, while De Zerbi is seen as a coach who demands control of games through structured build-up and ball dominance.

As The Telegraph points out, both Glasner and several other Premier League managers - including Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola - are approaching the final months of their contracts, potentially reducing the complexity of any summer move.

The outlet claims United are not expected to pursue Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea last week, as part of the process.

The Red Devils reportedly do not plan to make a permanent appointment until the summer, opening the door to an interim solution for the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the i Paper reports former midfielder Michael Carrick is among those being considered to take temporary charge, having been out of management since leaving Middlesbrough last summer.

The club is said to believe an interim appointment could still guide them back into the Champions League places, with United level on points with Chelsea in fifth.

Amorim was reportedly dismissed after concerns around his behaviour and tactical inflexibility came to a head.

According to sources close to the club, senior figures were troubled by what they described as “emotional and inconsistent behaviour” and a reluctance to significantly adapt his preferred 3-4-3 system.

In a statement confirming the decision, the United said: “The club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
