Jermaine Pennant's Anfield goal 'meant everything'

Jermaine Pennant’s first goal at Anfield “meant everything” to him.

The former winger – who played for Liverpool between 2006 and 2009 – hit the back of the net in a 2-0 Premier League win over Chelsea and he was proud to emulate his idols.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “My first ever goal at Anfield was against Jose Mourinho’s magical Chelsea team – Petr Cech was in goal and my best friend, Ashley Cole, was the player marking me when I scored.

“I volleyed it over his head – afterwards I just gave him a wink and he said, ‘Yeah, good goal mate…’

“It means everything to me because you look at Liverpool’s history, the players who have scored at Anfield, and I can say I’m one of them.

“Being a boyhood fan, I’d sat at home watching videos of Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and John Barnes, then 15 years later I was doing the exact same thing.

“That goal is one I’ll never forget.”

Jermaine made his first team debut when he was just 15 and playing for Notts County and he recalled having “no fear” when he stepped on the pitch for his first game as a substitute, an EFL Trophy match at home against Hull which his side lost 1-0.

He said: “It was a massive moment and the headlines that came from it were the start of my career path.

“I was so skinny and small, playing against absolute units, but I just had no fear when I came on.

“I almost scored and got someone sent off – one of the Hull players didn’t like having this 15-year-old kid going past him, must have thought, ‘I’m not having this’, then took me out and got shown a second yellow card for it.”
