Harry Redknapp gets 'buzz' from horse racing

Harry Redknapp gets the same “buzz” from horse racing as he did from football management.

The 79-year-old sporting legend hasn’t managed a soccer side since Birmingham City in 2017 and these days he gets as much pleasure from watching his horses in action as he ever did cheering his players from the touchline.

He told The Standard: “It’s that same buzz as football, that excitement of it all.

“When you’re watching a big race it’s nerve-racking like being on the touchline. Every time your horses jumps, you hold your breath so it’s a similarly nerve-racking experience.”

Asked how many horses he owns, he added: “You wouldn’t want to know, it’s an awful lot.”

Harry – who still has season tickets for former clubs Bournemouth and West Ham United – doesn’t expect to go back into football management at this stage of his life.

He said: “I’ve finished with that but I’m still enjoying my life and doing something I love doing in racing.”

But he still keeps an eye on all his former sides and is hoping West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur can avoid relegation from the Premier League.

He said: “I love cheering on all my old clubs. And of course I want to see West Ham and Tottenham stay up. But I don’t know, it’s going to be tight.

“Nottingham Forest have been very useful, Leeds are now looking out of it. I just hope all the London clubs survive.”
