Jannik Sinner breaks Novak Djokovic’s long-standing ATP Masters 1000 record

Jannik Sinner has broken Novak Djokovic’s long-standing ATP Masters 1000 record after a dominant straight-sets victory at the Miami Open.

The 24-year-old Italian world number two, surpassed Novak Djokovic’s previous mark of 24 consecutive sets won at Masters 1000 level by defeating Corentin Moutet in a 6–1 6–4 win lasting 71 minutes.

The victory marked Jannik’s 25th and 26th successive sets at the highest tier of tournaments outside the Grand Slams. He had earlier equalled Novak’s record with a win over Damir Dzumhur in his opening match.

The Miami Open result continues a strong run of form for Jannik, who has won his last two Masters 1000 events – Indian Wells earlier this month and Paris in November – without dropping a set.

Jannik was quoted by BBC Sport saying: “I am very happy. This sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we’ll see what is coming in the next round.”

He controlled the match from the outset against Corentin, winning 19 of the first 26 points and taking the opening set in 22 minutes.

Jannik then secured a decisive break in the fifth game of the second set before closing out the match on serve without facing significant pressure.

The result sets up a last-16 meeting with Alex Michelsen as Jannik continues his attempt to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ – winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season – a feat last achieved by Roger Federer in 2017.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Daniil Medvedev was eliminated in the last 32 by Francisco Cerundolo following a three-set contest that ended 6–0 4–6 7–5.

The match was briefly disrupted when umpire Mohamed Lahyani was forced to climb down from his chair after it became entangled with a ‘spider cam’ cable suspended above the court.

Officials intervened to prevent the chair from toppling, pausing play during the deciding set.

After the match, Francisco said: “I didn’t know what to expect, it was a great match, super tough.”

He added: “It was my first match against Daniil. He’s probably one of the only guys on tour who I have never played. He has had a great year so far.”
