Sir David Beckham hails Michael Carrick for Man Utd impact

Sir David Beckham has praised Michael Carrick for having a calming effect on Manchester United.

Carrick has overseen impressive results since taking over as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in January and the former United winger thinks that the coach has the credentials to take the job on a full-time basis.

Beckham told talkSPORT: "Yeah, I must admit, the last few months have been a lot more comfortable than the last 10 years, to be honest. It’s been tough over that time.

"But I think Michael’s got experience. I think he’s got a calmness about him that he’s brought into the club. He knows the club. He knows the players. He knows the way Man United play and the way Man United should play.

"And I’ve always liked Michael as a coach. You know, when you look at him, there’s a calmness. There’s, on the side of the pitch, there’s, I don’t want to say elegance because I’m not sure that’s the right thing to say, but there’s an elegance in the way he is, whether it’s the way he celebrates, whether it’s the way he gets angry.

"You know, all of those things are important in a manager. And I think that the way he’s got the team and brought the team together has been, has been incredible. And I think as a United fan, it’s exactly what we needed."

Beckham joins a growing number of ex-United players calling for Carrick to get the job full-time, after former striker Michael Owen stated earlier this month that appointing the former Red Devils midfielder would be the logical thing to do.

He told the BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show: "I can't believe people are questioning whether he should get the job.

"Manchester United have waited about 12 years - they've gone for proven, legends, everything since Sir Alex [Ferguson].

"And the one time they are starting to play well, get results, the fans are on board - you're telling me at the end of the season if he gets third [place] they will say, 'Thanks, but no thanks'. How is that possible?"
