Harry Maguire: Man Utd can win Premier League title next year

Harry Maguire thinks that Manchester United are capable of winning the Premier League title next season.

The defender signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford earlier this week and believes that United have the potential to compete for top spot if they recruit smartly in the summer.

Maguire told reporters: "We’re not in Europe this year, we’ve played 40 games so we definitely need a bigger squad next year. We need better quality, we need players to come into the starting XI.

"If we get the recruitment right and everything’s positive from now to the end of the season, we’ve got to be in the conversation to go and win the big trophies."

The England international has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his seven-year spell at United but is desperate to add more silverware to his collection.

Maguire said: "I always say football is about memories and you can create memories by having iconic matches, scoring goals, but the bottom line is you get memories from winning big trophies.

"I want to be part of that. That’s everyone’s dream. We’re not getting too carried away because last season was so poor. This year has been a lot better, but we’ve had no Europe, which has helped.

"If you keep the momentum and get the summer right there’s no reason why we can’t push [for the title]."

Maguire has faced criticism for his performances at club and international level in the past but says he is more concerned about the impact it has on his family.

He said of the constant attention on United: "I’d say that’s the hardest part, not just for myself but everybody in the squad.

"I see a lot of players come into this club and quite frankly it’s just too big for them. The eyes on, the scrutiny, the analysis, every goal that goes in.

"They [family members] read about it more and it probably frustrates them a lot more and they probably get involved a lot more."
