Louis Rees-Zammit felt he was 'wasting' skills in NFL

Louis Rees-Zammit returned to rugby as he felt his skills were being "wasted" in the NFL.

The Wales wing made the shock decision to pursue a career in American football in 2024 but returned to rugby after 18 months away with Bristol Bears last year as he felt his abilities were better suited to his original sporting passion.

Asked when he decided to come back to rugby, Rees-Zammit told Rugby World magazine: "It wasn't one specific day, it just slowly crept into my head.

"I felt like my skills and talent were being wasted because I could be so much more involved in a rugby match. It's hard to pick up a new sport.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity I had, but I'm very happy to be back (in rugby)."

Rees-Zammit explained that he feels rugby could learn a lot from how the NFL makes each game "an event" and thinks that Bristol Bears' annual Big Day Out at Cardiff's Principality Stadium is a clever idea.

He said: "The NFL does a great job of making the game an event. When you go to an NFL or NBA game, it's not just about the sport; there are things to do all around it. That's what the Big Day Out was trying to replicate.

"We need to grow the game through broadcasting and making it a family event with half-time shows and challenges. You want people to feel like they are getting more than just 80 minutes of rugby for their £120."

Rees-Zammit also expressed optimism for Wales' prospects after they ended their long wait for a Six Nations win against Italy in the final game of the 2026 championship.

The rugby star said: "We played poorly against England and France, but the Scotland game – which we should have won – set the standard.

"We took that to Ireland and were unlucky not to get the result. Putting those performances together to beat Italy comfortably was very encouraging. We're excited to see where we can go."
