The 31-year-old fighter dismissed his co-managers Darcy Ellis and Mike Altamura and trainer Pedro Diaz to work solely with Jeff Fenech in the wake of a difficult period in his career, and though he took a “risk”, he insisted he’s made the right move.

He told Boxing News magazine: “It wans’t anything to do with Pedro – what I learned from him was so refreshing, his passion and how much he wants to win.

“In Miami, I used to think, ‘You need to get away and try and struggle and sacrifice.’

“It’s actually not like that – you feel more comfortable when you’ve got the right surroundings.

“That’s why I decided to stay in Australia and with Jeff…

“I don’t need to be travelling and spending all this money on this and that. It’s better to be at home.

“They’ve got a different style. Pedro’s was moving around, trying to get as many points as you possibly can, learning the art, hundreds of jabs.

“[Jeff’s] more, ‘We’re gonna hit him and keep hitting him until he’s out.’

“When you mix them two together, it’s like a dynamic duo. I realised in Miami that as much as I love to jab-jab-jab, I’m still an aggressive, pressure fighter – you’ll never be able to take that out of me.”

Tim doesn’t think he can ask for better mentors than Jeff and his own father, Kostya Tszyu.

He said: “There’s not many [better] people that you can talk about certain scenarios with than Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu, and I’ve got these two as my mentors right now.

“They know exactly how I feel, inside and outside the ring.

“Anything I do in my life, it’s a headline here in Australia.

“Everyone’s talking about it. This is how it is.

“Jeff’s very, very loyal and he’s there to protect you.

“It’s refreshing to have someone by your side fighting the battles that people maybe don’t see.”
