Keely Hodgkinson got more 'exposure' after Olympic gold medal win

Keely Hodgkinson got a lot more "exposure" after winning Olympic gold.

The British athlete raced to glory in the 800m at the Paris 2024 Games and has reflected on how her life was transformed following the success.

In an interview with Runner's World UK magazine, Hodgkinson said: "It gave me a lot more exposure. I remember my Instagram following going from something like 180K to half a million overnight.

"Obviously, there are people with way more followers than that, but it was quite a big jump for me and it brought lots of people forwards that maybe didn't know track, and who might have only just heard of me. It also handed me a lot of cool opportunities."

Hodgkinson admits she found it hard to "balance" the "outside commitments" that came with her Olympics success.

The runner said: "I'm very much about balance and I try to find the time to enjoy the things that come off what I've achieved, without letting it distract me from what I do.

"Balancing everything - the outside commitments, training, my energy levels - has been a bit of a struggle at times. But whenever I feel overwhelmed, I just shut it down, go into hibernation."

Hodgkinson will be defending her title at the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Birmingham and says running on home ground "comes with a little bit of pressure".

She said of the event: "I can't wait. It comes with a little bit of pressure, defending my title on home turf, but I think it's great for the sport.

"People from all around the world love coming to the UK to watch athletics. London is one of the best Diamond Leagues in the world and I think the UK really gets behind track and field when it's put in front of them.

"Having three events in the UK - the London Diamond League, Commonwealths and Birmingham - is great."
