The 27-year-old played a pivotal role as the Magpies secured an instant return to the Premier League last season, as he finished as the club's leading scorer in the Championship, netting 23 goals.
Things have not gone so smoothly for the forward this term, however, as a hamstring problem disrupted his start to the campaign, while he has started just three of Newcastle's 11 top-flight games to date.
The former Crystal Palace striker is yet to register a goal this season, although he did have one ruled out during the Magpies last match against Bournemouth, a contest that also saw him return to the starting line-up.
Gayle admits he understands why he has been left out of the starting line-up at times this season, but he is desperate to re-stablish himself as Rafael Benitez' first-choice forward.
"Of course, it's frustrating not playing, and the team had been playing well, so I understood it," Gayle told the Shields Gazette. "I just need to try to work harder and prove to the gaffer I can be in the starting XI."
