The Cherries snapped up Mahoney from Blackburn during the summer, but he has struggled to make an impact at the Vitality Stadium, starting just two games in the FA Cup.
Eddie Howe is happy for him to go out on loan and Barnsley, one of the clubs who wanted to sign him before he joined Bournemouth, are in the hunt.
Barnsley are in need of reinforcements as they looks to pull away from trouble in the Championship, and would like to take Mahoney on loan for the rest of the season.
The 20-year-old also attracted interest from Sunderland and Nottingham Forest and it is though both clubs are keeping tabs on the situation once again.
Howe will be keen to ensure that wherever Maloney goes, he will play regular first-team football, something Barnsley would be able to offer him.
