Solskjaer's predecessor Jose Mourinho made signing at least one new central defender his top priority while in charge at Old Trafford, but failed to land his top targets.
Reports now claim that Solskjaer, once given the United job on a permanent basis, will target the end of the pitch and has put the Borussia Dortmund ace at the top of his wanted list.
The young England international would not come cheap, and reports claim Solskjaer will keep faith with his current crop of defenders and invest what money he does have in Sancho.
United would face very strong competition for Sancho's services if Dortmund did make him available, but are confident they could win the race and do a deal.
Should Sancho be out of reach for whatever reason, it has also been claimed that Juventus' Brazilian winger Douglas Costa and Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic, are alternative options.
