Free, limited version of ChatGPT rolling out without need to sign up

OpenAI has started letting users use ChatGPT for free without signing up for an account.

The AI chatbot's free version only has knowledge up until January 2022, however, so in order to get the most out of the software, it's recommended to get an OpenAI Plus subscription.

A blog post dated April 1 read: “Starting today, you can use ChatGPT instantly, without needing to sign-up. We're rolling this out gradually, with the aim to make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities."

It continued: "We’ve also introduced additional content safeguards for this experience, such as blocking prompts and generations in a wider range of categories."

OpenAI added: "There are many benefits to creating an account including the ability to save and review your chat history, share chats, and unlock additional features like voice conversations and custom instructions.

"For anyone that has been curious about AI’s potential but didn’t want to go through the steps to set-up an account, start using ChatGPT today."

The move comes after rival AI chatbot Grok by Elon Musk's xAI was made more accessible.

After making it available to X's Premium+ subscribers since its early beta stages, the billionaire businessman made Grok available to Premium users.

It costs $8 a month or $84 a year to upgrade to a Premium account.

The company also open sourced Grok, so developers can modify the language model to build AI applications.
