Apple iPhones sold in US being sourced from India instead of China amid trade war

A "majority" of Apple iPhones sold in the US will not come from China due to the impacts of President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.

The American technology titan's CEO Tim Cook has said they will come from India instead, and almost all iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPod products will be sourced from Vietnam.

However, devices sold outside of the US will continue to be manufactured in China.

Cook said President Trump's escalating trade war is having a limited impact on its 2025 performance so far, and he expects US tariffs to cost $900 million in the current quarter.

The 64-year-old Apple boss said on an earnings call: "[We expect] a majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin.

"We are not able to precisely estimate the impact of tariffs, as we are uncertain of potential future actions before the end of the quarter.

"Assuming the current global tariff rates, policies and applications do not change for the balance of the quarter and no new tariffs are added, we estimate the impact to add $900 million to our costs."

The Trump administration has repeatedly said in the past that it wants Apple to move production to America.

Cook said "having everything" in one country "had too much risk" attached to it, but as Apple has "opened up new sources of supply" with "certain parts" of the supply chain, he thinks this could continue in the future.

He told analysts: "What we learned some time ago was that having everything in one location had too much risk with it and so we have, over time with certain parts of the supply chain, opened up new sources of supply.

"You could see that kind of thing continuing in the future."
