Following widespread job cuts at Microsoft, Blizzard has ceased development on additional content for Warcraft Rumble - its free‑to‑play mobile tower-defense game launched in 2023. However, the game will remain active with ongoing bug fixes and regular live‑events, but no further expansions.
In a statement, Blizzard wrote: “Warcraft Rumble began development nine years ago as a love letter to Azeroth and launched back in 2023, reflecting input from enthusiastic players around the globe and the effort of a passionate team - some of whom continue to support Rumble or other Blizzard games, and some we’ve had to sadly part ways with.
“Since launch, Rumble has struggled to find its footing relative to our ambition for its long-term success, and for some time now the team has been listening to player feedback, refocusing in certain areas, and exploring different options.
“Some of that work showed signs of progress, but ultimately wasn’t enough to put the game on a path to sustainability.”
Warcraft Rumble debuted in November 2023, and despite Blizzard’s investment, the game struggled to meet expectations, reportedly generating around $74 million across mobile platforms.
Its cancellation comes amid a wave of cuts affecting around 100 Blizzard developers as part of Microsoft’s overhaul of its gaming division.
Blizzard confirmed some Rumble team members have departed, though remaining staff will now support the game’s live‑ops and prioritise community stability.
Players can still expect seasonal events and bug patches, but no future expansions or new modes.
Blizzard has not disclosed future plans for the IP and may choose to revisit Rumble’s formula in other formats - or potentially move on entirely.
