Snapchat set to charge users to store old photos and videos

Snapchat will introduce fees for users who want to preserve their archived content.

Under the new plan - which affects the Memories feature, moving away from the free, unlimited model it has used since 2016 - users with more than 5 GB of saved photos and videos will need to upgrade to paid storage plans or risk losing access.

Snap says that most Snapchatters - those under the 5 GB threshold - “won’t be affected.”

A blog post announcing the change includes the line: “It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost.”

The company will grant users 12 months of temporary storage to decide whether to upgrade or download their data elsewhere.

According to TechCrunch, the initial 100 GB plan is expected to cost around $1.99/month, while 250 GB will be bundled with Snapchat+ (priced at $3.99/month).

The decision has triggered backlash from longtime users.

Some have decried the move as “greedy” and unfair, arguing that many of them have years of cherished visual memories stored in the app.

Industry analysts see the shift as part of a broader trend toward monetizing social platforms’ storage burdens.

The change comes as Snap faces growing pressure to find sustainable revenue streams in a competitive social media landscape.

Snap says the switch will help it continue investing in Memories’ infrastructure and features going forward.
