Sony ‘shutting down some PlayStation 4 services for new games in 2026’

Sony is reportedly beginning to wind down certain PlayStation 4 features.

According to documentation obtained by Insider Gaming, Sony will begin removing access to several legacy PlayStation Network (PSN) services for new PS4 game submissions from spring 2026.

This means that any new title certified for the system after that date will no longer support specific online features.

The affected services include the Activity Feed Web API, Title Small Storage (TSS), Title User Storage (TUS), Users and Profiles, Word Filters, and the Shared Media Web API.

Sony has reportedly told developers that the move is designed to create “a more unified and scalable foundation across console generations.”

The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013 and has sold more than 117 million units worldwide, making it one of the most successful consoles of all time.

Despite the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, the PS4 has remained active thanks to its huge install base, with blockbuster franchises such as Call of Duty still supporting the platform.

However, the decision to sunset core services for new releases indicates Sony is finally preparing to phase out support.

Industry analysts note that while existing PS4 games will remain playable with their current features intact, future titles will gradually lose parity with PS5 versions.

The shift comes as rumors build around the PlayStation 6, expected to launch either next year or 2027, and as Sony focuses its resources on next-generation hardware and cloud gaming initiatives.

For millions still gaming on PS4, this change marks the beginning of the end of full support - though the system will likely continue to see new software and updates for at least a few more years.
