Google bringing Gemini AI to more students and educators for free

Google is expanding free access to its Gemini AI tools across education, making more generative AI features available to students and educators through Google Workspace for Education at no additional cost.

The update will bring select Gemini in Workspace features to Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning add-on tiers, widening access to AI-powered writing, analysis, and creative tools that were previously reserved for paid plans.

Google has said the move reflects strong demand from schools looking to integrate AI into everyday teaching and administrative workflows.

For institutions using Education Fundamentals, Gemini features are coming to Gmail, including tools that help draft emails, summarise long threads, and generate suggested replies.

Education Plus and Teaching and Learning customers will gain deeper integrations across Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Vids, and Drive, enabling tasks such as generating lesson materials, analysing data, creating presentations and videos, and summarizing responses with AI assistance.

Most features will roll out in the coming weeks for users aged 18 and over, with some capabilities, including Gemini in Gmail and Sheets, arriving later this year.

Google is also adding more granular admin controls, allowing schools to enable or disable Gemini access on an app-by-app basis.

Alongside the expanded free access, Google introduced Workspace Studio, a new tool included in all Workspace for Education editions.

Powered by Gemini 3, Workspace Studio allows educators and administrators to create custom, no-code AI agents that automate common tasks, such as summarizing meetings, managing email attachments, or triaging inboxes for urgent actions.

Google is positioning these changes as complementary to its paid Google AI Pro for Education offering, which continues to provide access to more advanced models, premium features, and early releases.

AI Pro is aimed primarily at faculty and staff who want deeper integrations, research tools, and enhanced productivity features.
