Spotify unveils 'verified' badge to distinguish human and AI-generated content

Spotify has unveiled a verification system designed to differentiate human musicians from AI content.

The streaming giant says that the 'Verified by Spotify' badge - marked by a green checkmark - will start to appear on artist profiles and search results over the coming weeks, indicating that a profile has been reviewed and meets the company's standard for authenticity.

Spotify said in a blog post that profiles primarily containing AI-generated music or AI-created artists will not be eligible for the verification badge.

The firm said: "In the AI era, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to."

To be verified, artists must demonstrate sustained listener engagement over time, whilst complying with Spotify's platform rules and showing a genuine presence both on and off the platform - such as concert dates, merchandise and linked social media accounts.

The Swedish company said that over 99 per cent of artists that users actively search for will be verified immediately, representing hundreds of thousands of acts spanning multiple genres.

Spotify's initiative arrived amid growing concern about AI-generated content in the music industry overwhelming streaming catalogues.

Competing platform Deezer revealed last week that AI-generated tracks make up 44 per cent of all new music uploaded to the service every day.

Meanwhile, Sony Music recently said that it had sought the takedown of over 135,000 AI-produced songs that mimicked artists signed to the record label.

Aside from the badge, Spotify is adding a new information section to all artist pages - regardless of whether they have been verified - showcasing career highlights, release patterns and live performance history.

The company has likened this feature to nutritional labelling for food, giving listeners a quick method of gauging an artist's track record on the streaming platform.
