Facebook releases meme-making app

Facebook has released its own meme-making app.

The social network's own New Product Experimentation (NPE) team has quietly developed the new programme Whale - which has only been released on the Canadian App store so far - to allow users to edit their own photos and images from a stock photo library.

On the listing, the company says: "No distractions, no hidden subscription pricing.

"Use your own images or choose from our stock photo library and get creative with text, tools, effects, and more right inside the app."

It's said that Whale has no "hidden premium subscription fees", while creations can be saved "directly to your camera roll" and shared on "social media and message threads right from the app".

Under the heading 'HOW IT WORKS', Facebook DPE team explains: "Pick a photo: Snap a real time-photo, choose from your camera roll, or browse our library of stock images.

"Make your meme: "Get creative with text, images, emojis, filters, and popular effects.

"Save and share: Share your creation on social media or directly in your conversations right from the app."

Whale follows a long list of experimental apps launched or bought by Facebook in the past - ranging from Moments, Notify and Lifestage to Poke, Moves and Hello - and it's not known if the programme will receive a full release.
