The famous sign - which is on Mount Lee, nestled in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains - attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, who want to grab that infamous photograph with the iconic sign and now local people have been asked by Los Angeles officials how they think it will be best to reduce the traffic and congestion in that area.
In a report, consulting firm Dixon Resources Unlimited - who has worked alongside the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks on the Griffith Park Transportation and Parking Action Plan - offered a number of ideas to improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic loads on nearby residential streets.
The report said that locals were supportive of "replicating the Hollywood Sign on the Burbank-facing hillside of Griffith Park and installing smaller signs at different locations". It also said "these signs would draw visitors to other locations and provide additional photo opportunities".
Some other ideas suggested were to make it easier for people to find their way to the sign when they arrived in the area and thus stop people parking wherever they felt like.
They added in the report: "Developing a comprehensive Wayfinding Plan that identifies sign locations, ideal vista and photo opportunities, and rideshare pick-up/drop-off zones. Such a plan would also create a recognizable Hollywood Sign brand, installing digital messaging to redirect drivers, and with special attention to how pedestrians can safely enter and exit the neighbourhood ... Developing a dedicated Hollywood Sign website drafted by the community that contains information about parking access, sign history, and other relevant visitor information. This website would ideally be promoted on other travel sites ... Relocating access points to share visitor traffic across the area. One location promoted for alternate trail access was the top of Beachwood Drive south of the current gate."
