A study by Expedia has found that those who use online travel agencies to book their breaks away stay away for longer periods of time compared to those who don't use these agencies.
More than one fifth (21 per cent) of those surveyed used an agency to plan and book their trip and eight per cent of people stayed longer and also nearly 18 per cent spent more per trip.
Abhijit Pal, head of research for Expedia, said: "Online travel agencies are a valuable contributor to the travel ecosystem, often bringing a larger traveller spend to every facet of a trip, regardless of trip purpose. With more than one-fifth of travelers using an online travel agency to book all or part of their trip, the data shows the scale and importance of this traveller segment to hotel brands and owners, transportation companies, restaurants and other businesses in destination."
Meanwhile, it was previously revealed that millennials are relying on travel agents more than ever before.
David Kolner, Virtuoso's senior vice president of global member partnerships, added: "For travel agencies today, especially in the luxury category, boomers are absolutely what those businesses should be focusing on. They are a huge opportunity. They represent, usually, at least half or almost half of total sales in an agency, so it's just a great market. And I know everybody's very excited about millennials, and somewhat about Xers, but the real money right now continues to be in boomers."
