The Barcelona legend revealed that he would like to play football in the MLS and experience life Stateside before the end of his career.
Messi is allowed to discuss a move away from Barcelona to overseas clubs from next month but is unsure about his future at the Nou Camp.
He told Spanish TV channel La Sexta: "I don't know what I'm going to do yet.
"I'm going to wait until the season ends. I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity.
"Right now the most important thing is to focus on the team and finish the season well, to focus on trying to win trophies and not get distracted by other things."
Barca are currently struggling financially and Messi doesn't believe there is any chance of a potential reunion with former team-mate Neymar due to the economic climate.
Asked about the possibility of the Brazilian returning to the club, Messi said: "How do you pay PSG? It would be very expensive.
"They need to bring in various players and it's going to be hard to bring in quality players because there's no money. The club is in a difficult moment, everything that surrounds Barcelona is bad. It's in a really bad, bad way. And it's going to be difficult to get back where it was."
