The Argentine football great expects to play for some time to come but stressed that he will not prolong his glittering career for longer than necessary.

Messi told the Big Time podcast: "I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer able to perform, that I no longer enjoy or help my team-mates, I will quit.

"I'm very self-critical. I know when I'm good, when I'm bad, when I'm playing well, and when I'm playing badly.

"When I feel it's time to take that step, I'll take it without thinking about age. If I feel good, I'll always try to keep competing because it's what I like and what I know how to do."

The Inter Miami star confessed that he has given little thought to what he will do once his playing career concludes.

He said: "The truth is I haven’t thought about it yet. Today, I try to enjoy it day-by-day, enjoy every moment without thinking about it more than that.

"I don’t have anything clear yet but to keep playing, which is what I’d like to do for a while longer. When the moment arrives, surely I’ll find the path to whatever fills me with joy and I enjoy and it’ll be a new role."
