Xabi Alonso set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen

Xabi Alonso is expected to stay at Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The Spanish coach has been strongly linked to both Liverpool and Bayern Munich but is thought to have committed his future to Leverkusen, who he has on course for a first Bundesliga title this season where they remain unbeaten in all competitions.

Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeness admits that a move for the coach this summer is "probably impossible".

He said: "[Alonso] is more inclined to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in view of their current successes, because he would not want to leave them behind.

"Let's say if he had two or three more years of success, it would probably be easier to bring him out of there."

Alonso had a successful stint at Liverpool as a player and the former midfielder was seen as the favourite to replace the departing Jurgen Klopp this summer, although he shut down questions about his future when asked last month.

He told reporters: "Maybe you have some questions about my future, but I’m sorry, I have nothing new to say. I wanted to say that beforehand.

"Right now I’m the (Leverkusen) coach. That’s for sure. I have nothing new to say for the future. We will see. It’s normal that there are questions, but it’s off-topic now. Now is not the time for me to talk much about it.

"I know that it is my goal, it is my job, to be successful with the team. This is my work. We are in a very good situation right now. We want to continue like this. That’s enough for me."
