Gary Neville refuses to blame Jurgen Klopp's exit for Liverpool collapse

Gary Neville doesn't think Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool exit can be blamed for the team's poor form.

The Reds have seen their Premier League title challenge fade after some disappointing results in recent weeks but the Sky Sports pundit does not believe that Klopp's decision to step down at the end of the campaign is behind the current problems.

Neville said: "I don't think what's happened with Liverpool in the last few weeks is because Jurgen Klopp was announced earlier in the season. I don't think that at all.

"Everyone said it was a positive thing. 'It's the farewell run-in. We all know. We can go and enjoy ourselves in Dublin and win four trophies.' People were using it as a positive angle at one point. Now it's gone slightly wrong in terms of the performances."

Neville claims that Liverpool's season should be considered a success despite them falling away in the title race after a period of change in terms of the playing staff at Anfield.

He said: "I think always think you should judge a team based on what you thought at the start of the season and if you had said to me, 'Liverpool will win a trophy and finish third'. I'd have said that was a bloody good season without a midfield at the start of the year and thinking that they were going to transition from this great team into this new team."

Neville ultimately thinks that the Reds lacked the quality to last the pace with Arsenal and Manchester City.

He said: "The talk of emotion helping you and the Jurgen Klopp farewell. That works but you have to get near the end for that.

"They just haven't been good enough. I think with Liverpool it's not a case of their mentality or anything like that, I think they've just gone as far as they possibly can and they're just drained."
