Ange Postecoglou slams football fans for trying to 'diminish' Tottenham's season

Ange Postecoglou has slammed people for trying to "diminish" Tottenham's season achievements after comparing the team to Manchester United.

The 59-year-old Spurs manager took issue with football fans drawing comparisons after the north London team secured a 2-0 win against Bodo/Glimt at the Aspmyra Stadion in Bodo, Norway, on Thursday night (08.05.25) to book a place in the UEFA Europa League final against Premier League rivals United on May 21 at the Estadio de San Mames stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

United boss Ruben Amorim has suggested that winning the tournament would not be enough to make up for United's poor domestic campaign but Postecoglou doesn't think that the same should be said of Spurs - who will bid to win their first major silverware for 17 years later this month.

After being asked if he agreed with Amorim's comment, Postecoglou answered in a press conference: "Why do I care what United think? Why is that relevant to me? Ask the Man Utd manager why he said that. Me, I’ve said all along that this is important.

"To be fair, you know better than me, you’ve probably followed more closely than I have. What do you think a trophy would do for this club? The question answers itself.

"But what’s happening right now is that people are fearing that. That it actually might happen.

"Because if it happens, [people will say] ‘Let’s see how we can tear it down somehow, diminish it somehow by saying it’s been a poor season and that we don’t deserve this or don’t deserve that or by somehow comparing us to Man Utd.’"

Despite the rocky season for Spurs, Postecoglou is "proud" of his players and is thrilled to be in the Europa League showpiece as they put in a professional performance at the home of the Norwegian champions.

He told TNT Sports: "I couldn’t be more proud of the lads. We knew it was a difficult place to come with the weather they have here and the pitch, but the lads handled it really well.

"We fully deserved to get through after both legs and we’re excited. We’re in a final."
