Rory McIlroy 'excited' to play first tournament in India

Rory McIlroy is "excited" to play his first tournament in India later this year.

The Masters champion will be part of the field for the inaugural DP World India Championship that will take place at Delhi Golf Club from 16-19 October and is looking forward to the new event.

McIlroy said: "I'm excited to not only tee it up in India for the first time but also visit a country that I've always wanted to explore.

"I'm proud to play in the inaugural DP World India Championship. I've always enjoyed playing a global schedule and as I have previously said, there is tremendous potential to grow golf further in the country.

"This is a great opportunity, and I can't wait to play in front of Indian golf fans."

The Northern Irish golfer put in a disappointing showing at the PGA Championship last week as he could finish tied 47th at Quali Hollow but revealed that he is playing without pressure following his triumph at Augusta last month, which saw him become just the sixth male player to complete the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy said: "I have achieved everything that I’ve wanted. I have done everything I’ve wanted to do in the game. I dreamed as a child of becoming the best player in the world and winning all the majors. I’ve done that. Everything beyond this, for however long I decide to play the game competitively, is a bonus."

The world number two has been tipped to add to his five major wins after ending his 11-year drought at The Masters but is refusing to get carried away by numbers.

He said: "I’ve always said I’m never going to put a number on it. I’ve talked about trying to become the best European ever or the best international player ever or whatever that is. The numbers tell one story, but it mightn’t be the full story."
