Corey Pavin: Ryder Cup players don't need to be paid

Corey Pavin doesn’t believe golfers should be paid to take part in the Ryder Cup.

The 65-year-old sporting veteran – who captained America in the 2010 tournament – insisted the honour or representing the US or Europe should be enough, rather than players needing to gain financially too.

He told Today’s Golfer magazine: “When I played and when I was captain, the PGA of America gave us money to donate to charity. That was great.

2But being paid to play? I’m not a fan of that.

“Representing the United States or Europe is honour enough.

“You don’t need to have financial gain from it.

“And everybody has something in their sponsorship contracts about playing Ryder Cups so they’re gaining anyway.

“It’s sad to see that money has become an issue.”

Corey was “ecstatic” to be named captain for the tournament as he never expected to receive the honour.

He said: “I never thought I would be considered for the captaincy.

“Way back when, you had to win the PGA championship to be captain.

“There were a couple of exceptions, but I owe a lot to Tom Lehman.

“He’s godparent to our daughter and he picked me to be his vice-captain on purpose, because he wanted me to have the opportunity to be captain.

“Four years later, I got the chance and I was ecstatic.”
