Iga Swiatek has surprised herself with Wimbledon run

Iga Swiatek has shocked herself with her performances on grass as she booked a place in the Wimbledon final.

The Polish ace eased past Belinda Bencic in straight sets to seal a place in the All England Club showpiece against Amanda Anisimova on Saturday (12.07.25) and has been surprised by her form at a tournament she had never previously done well at.

Swiatek said:"Honestly I never even dreamt it was going to be possible for me to play in the final. I’m just super excited. I thought I experienced everything on the court but I didn’t experience playing well on grass.

"I feel confident and I’m just going for it. For sure it’s working."

Swiatek is a five-time Grand Slam champion but has struggled for results this year, although she denied that she has felt less pressure at SW19 after failing to win the French Open for the first time since 2021.

The former world number one said: "I think I’m not going to have seasons where the pressure is not going to be kind of forced on me from the expectations from the outside anymore.

"Every year it’s kind of the same, but I feel sometimes I can handle it better or ignore it. I think it’s easier if you haven’t won Roland Garros and also if you had more time to practice."

Swiatek has lost her place at the top of the world rankings after an underwhelming year and conceded that she was "doing something wrong" after she suffered an early exit at the Italian Open in May.

She said at the time: "For sure, it hasn't been easy. For sure, I'm doing something wrong.

"So I need to just regroup and kind of change some stuff. I had some advice from the team. I'll just try to do that.

"Daria [Abramowicz, Swiatek’s psychologist], like everybody from my team. We talked and came to some conclusions.

"I'm just going to change my mindset a little bit.

"I just wasn't there; present to fight and to compete. I focused on mistakes. It's my mistake, and I'm not doing things right.

"The focus is on the wrong things from my side and I'll try to change that."
