Amee-Leigh Costigan hails captaincy an honour

Amee-Leigh Costigan has hailed receiving Ireland’s captaincy “such an honour”.

The 30-year-old sportswoman – who has represented her country in both sevens and 15s – was given the armband ahead of the Six Nations earlier this year and she’s grateful to have such supportive teammates.

She told Rugby World magazine: “It was such an honour, with such a special bunch.

“when Scott (Bemand) announced it to the team, everyone came over and gave me a hugh, and really connected with me.

“Sam Monaghan, Never Jones and Tricky (Edel McMahon) really helped me over those first couple of day.

“I was kind of like, ‘Someone pinch me and wake me up from this dream.’ Then I realised you’re in it now. Just keep doing what you’re doing.

“They said, ‘If you need to gather the group for a minute or say something, do it’. But be yourself out there.”

And now Amee-Leigh is looking forward to the upcoming World Cup.

She said: “We want to go hard at this world Cup and put a stamp on what this Irish team is about.”

However Ireland fare in the tournament, she hopes she can set a good example to young people.

She said: “I’m trying to learn a lot about the game and chase being the best player I can be.

“There are so many great people around me that have been really helpful.

“I’m just incredibly grateful for that and to get another opportunity to play 15s for Ireland.

“Grateful to wear the jersey, put my name out there and show younger girls and boys that this is all possible.

“You don’t have to have bene playing rugby from the age of four, that’s for sure.”
