Wednesday return inspires travellers

Bookings for 'spooky' hotels have surged since Wednesday season 2 hit screens.

The Netflix saga returned for a second series earlier this month, and since then, online travel agency Thomas Cook have seen a 76% year-on-year rise in bookings to Barcelona, largely for the city's Gothic Quarter, while reservations in Dublin, Ireland - where the show is filmed - have almost tripled in 12 months.

Nicholas Smith, Holidays Digital Director at Thomas Cook, said in a statement: "It’s fascinating to see how what we watch can inspire where we travel.

"The release of Wednesday Season 2 has clearly sparked the imaginations of tourists keen to explore destinations they might never have considered. We love helping customers turn those cultural inspirations into real-life adventures - and this is a wonderfully unique way to see the world."

The first season of Wednesday was filmed in Romania, but showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar previously explained they headed to Ireland this time around because of the "magical" light.

Miles said: "Everything about Ireland fits the sensibility of the show: we have incredible woods; we have beautiful castles; we have the lush greens, the gray skies.

"There’s something magical about the light that really lends itself to the show."
