The Atletico Madrid stopper has won the Zamora trophy as the league’s best goalkeeper a record six times but he admitted he’d prefer to share a “big title” with his teammates than bag a seventh piece of silverware himself.
He told World Soccer magazine: “It is a big thing – but I cannot compare it with team titles.
“Without a doubt I would swap some of those Zamora trophies for a big title with the club.
“Of course, I am proud and pleased about those individual awards - I know how hard it is to get there, I appreciate them – but, as I said, I would immediately swap them for some silverware with the club.”
Jan’s father was a goalkeeper for his hometown club Skofja Loka and the sportsman thinks it was always his “destiny” to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
He said: “It seems that it was my destiny to become a goalkeeper, just like my father.
“At youth level, I did play as an outfield player. I played as a centre-forward.
“I liked that too, but it was always my wish to become a goalkeeper.”
