Spurs reluctant to pay Ross Barkley's wages

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley will have to lower his wage demands if he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, reports have claimed.

Barkley has turned down a new contract at Goodison Park, where the money he was offered would make him one of the top earners at the Liverpool-based Premier League club.

Spurs have made no secret of their admiration for the attacking midfielder but are reluctant to meet Everton's $52.8 million valuation for a player that will be available on a free transfer this time next year, and will not pay his wage demands on top.

Tottenham are heading back to the UK after the pre-season trip to the USA with boss Mauricio Pochettino promising to strengthen the squad but calling for calm at the same time, and he will not panic buy Barkley.

Barkley does have other options with a host of Premier League clubs showing an interest in him, but the total financial package involved is also likely to scare them off unless the midfielder drops his demands.

Everton are keen to cash in and sign Gylfi Sigurdsson, while there is a chance Tottenham could also switch their attention to the Swansea midfielder if they run out of patience with Barkley.
