Mauricio Pochettino reveals Morata talks

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he did speak with Spain striker Alvaro Morata regarding a move to the club this summer.

The 24-year-old completed his move away from Real Madrid this summer to make the switch to Chelsea but not before he held talks with Tottenham about playing for the North London club in the Premier League.

Pochettino has confirmed he did speak with the for Los Blancos forward but Morata was not keen to make the switch to White Hart Lane as he thought he would struggle to compete with first-choice forward Harry Kane.

The Spurs manager was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "Morata said to me, 'Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?'. You know, if you go to try to sign a striker, they will say, 'Eh gaffer, you want me for what? To be on the bench? Because it's Harry Kane, I can't compete with Harry Kane.' "

Pochettino was surprised by Morata's response but accepts that top players want to play.

He added: "What happens when you say, 'I am No 1', 'I am No 2'... and the No 1 believes they have more right than another and the other feels he is less. It's so difficult to manage that situation. That's why as a manager you must give the possibility to rotate when they're at the same level."
