Rose has yet to play this season as he continues to recover from serious injury but reports are rife suggesting the left-back could be heading for the exit door when the January transfer window opens.
The England international caused a storm earlier in the summer when criticizing the club's transfer policy and wage structure, but immediately received the backing of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino who insisted the player remained in his plans.
However, during the same interview, Rose did say he would like to return north one day and is sure to jump at the chance of a move to United if the Reds make a move to sign him.
It also means that Rose is likely to turn his back on a move to Chelsea to get his wish of a move back north, but United will first of all have to agree a fee with Spurs which may be easier said than done.
Jose Mourinho wants a new left-back and it would appear Rose is high on his list of targets.
